Professionally a Visual Artist for over 30 years, I occasionally have poems that come to me. The past year I have dealt with Breast Cancer. My collection of works on this site reflect this unexpected and difficult journey. Transplanting Gardens

Yesterday I transplanted bits of my garden from NJ to MAINE.

HYDRANGEA, PEONY, BLACKBERRY VINE, CORAL BELLS, RHUBARB.

Dead looking bulbs come out of wet plastic bags that Lee and Camille lovingly packed.

Int. MAINE soil on a lovely warm November day.

Will these bulbs take root?

Will my clippings adapt and adopt this foreign strange soil?

Up To Six Prunes

Mom called me to let me know she had made it to six prunes.

"The Doctor told me my bowels are long and loopy", and so the prunes were prescribed.

"Your kids need prunes Erin, soak them daily in O.J. and make it work".

I am up to six a day, though I doubt I would rush it to that level.

Powerful stuff those prunes.

I thank her for the phone call and quickly erased the conversation from my day.

Buckled in Maine

The upward track clicks and clacks in noise suspense. Buckled in there is no escape. Crowded into the car, we all sit, silent. Nearly at the top, we lift arms high to feel the free fall drop. I love wooden roller coasters. Being out of control and safe, dropping the stomach - funny. Swishing and gravity play.

The Oncologist said the next five months of Chemo will be like riding one. So here I sit, the next week clicking up the hill. Not alone, another controlling the ride. Nervous about the plunge but in general comforted by the analogy because I've always eventually exited the ride.

Add in 10lbs

I can't get rid of this tire around my middle.

I exercise and eat fairly healthy.

10lbs heavier than I've ever been, thinking it was the new silicone implants and then Dr confirmed - it's what happens. Add it to the over all suck. The theme of the season is round, round head and round belly.

It is what it is.

GREY SKY

The actual sky is Grey.

MAINE in Grey.

Grey is beautiful and complicated.

There is no Sadness in this rich color.

I am not sad when I paint with Grey.

I am mature and seasoned and the painter I strive to become.

Inversion

I am upside side in the Yoga room.

Sweat drips from feet to head.

My Lymph system getting a healthy upheaval.

What is the point?

Many mornings, I concoct grey, brown smoothies of various roots, grains and dairy, bypassing the butter and white toast.

Yet, I have been randomly selected to get breast cancer.

Night Grinding (TEETH)

My dental hygienist declares that I grind my teeth enamel - erosion and all that.

This news is strange to me.

Deep sleep and prolific dreamer - how would I know?

As my mind sorts and organises the day's information, my jaw responds as well, clenching as it processes my teenagers actions or a bill unpaid.

Molars clamping and shifting, thinking about tomorrow's to-do list; brain and jaw in sync.

The Summer Of Sour And Uncontrolled Chip Munching

Yes, a just opened bag of cape cod sour cream and onion chips, halfway disappeared in 15 minutes.

This, as well as Farm Stand Sauerkraut, on tap sour beers and Haribo sour gummies.

Sure, I throw in the occasional greens, but salty & sour are the themes for Summer 2016.

My taste buds reflecting the sour struggle of being a career painter and many salty tears.

Craving sour over bitter, over sugar.

German heritage making its presence known with a punch at age 43?

The Good Student

I am the good student.

I take notes and get my homework turned in on time; uncomfortable with failure, abiding by the teacher's every suggestion.

It’s the same with being a patient.

There is no courage involved - only checking off the to-do list; the team of teachers, the different classrooms and topics and learning new vocabulary and research.

I find myself Desperate for the pat on the back of a job well done, striving for the “A+,” upon completion.

SlowTime

Just Me.

Sleeping 10 hours.

Granola and coffee in silence.

Empty time for refuelling.

College Process, Foster Kid Drama, Audit.

Graduation All Over.

Kitten In Fridge

My son told me the kitten had been shut in the fridge.

Fortunately, Angus was still hungry, so he had reason to open the door.

Bottom shelf, the kitten sat.

I am glad teenagers eat often.

Lopsided

My breasts are lopsided.

The silicone disks each doing its own thing.

The plastic surgeon was great and apparently at some point these gummy boobs settle.

I was going to show you a photo but then wondered if that would be porn.

But how are these things under my skin different than the steel plate in my wrist or my knee caps?

Interestingly, strange with a Frankenstein scar where a nipple should be. One breast an inch lower than the other. These pretenders are so funny.
